Carta Porte: What you need to know to ship to and from Mexico

New tax regulations in Mexico have been enacted, which require FedEx Freight to obtain certain information from you, to allow the transportation of your packages across Mexican Federal roadways, after their import to, or before their export from, Mexico.

This extra information will be used by FedEx Freight in Mexico to issue what is called a Complemento Carta Porte (Carta Porte for short). The Carta Porte must accompany any CFDI (electronic invoice) that is produced for a shipment.

Enforcement of this regulation began January 1, 2024.

Customers shipping to Mexico from the United States using a FedEx Freight product should provide the following data elements to comply with Carta Porte Requirements:

  • Tax ID for shipper in the United States
  • Tax ID/RFC for the consignee in Mexico
  • Unit of measure & weight
  • Product Code: can be located on the Website of the Tax Authority

Ensure this information is completely and accurately included on a physical FedEx Freight Bill of Ladings, LTL Select, or within the “special instructions” section if using other automation tools. You can access and download the FedEx Freight Bill of Ladings here.
