To create an LTL (less-than-truckload) shipment, you’ll need a FedEx Freight account.
If you don’t have one, open an account to get started.
Step-by-step freight shipping instructions
Get an LTL freight quote
Get an LTL quote for shipping throughout Canada and to/from the U.S.
Other quote options:
- Save time by comparing rate quotes from multiple carriers, all in one place. It’s fast and free to use LTL Select.
- If your freight shipments weigh between 4,000 lbs. and 44,000 lbs., get economical large-volume rates.
Create a Bill of Lading (BOL)
You can create a BOL online for any shipment type. For international, hazmat, or SLC (Shipper Load and Count) shipments, you must provide a paper copy of your BOL to the FedEx Freight driver at pickup, regardless of whether the shipment was created online. You also have the option to print and fill out a paper BOL.
Be sure you complete any additional shipping forms required for your shipment.
Pack and prep your LTL freight
The safest and most efficient way to ship LTL freight is on pallets. But you need to choose pallets that can handle compression, shock, and vibration. And what about other packaging materials? Or labels that show your shipment is fragile, high value, or top load only? You’ll find lots of best practices in our freight packaging guide.
Schedule a freight pickup
- You can request a one-time pickup when you create your Bill of Lading.
- You can schedule a pickup up to 10 business days in advance.
- 3 p.m. is the general cutoff time for scheduling a pickup.
- Pickups are planned for a 90-minute window. The latest pickup time is at least 90 minutes before your dock closes. Times vary based on which freight service you choose and your destination. Need a later pickup time? Call FedEx Freight Customer Support at 1.866.393.4685 or your local service center.
- Let us know if you need to request a liftgate for pickup or delivery. A liftgate is the device on a truck that raises and lowers freight to and from the ground to the trailer. If there’s no shipping dock, make sure you request a liftgate to avoid delays and extra fees.
Track your freight shipment
Each individual pallet has its own shipping label and unique 12-digit tracking number. You can track your shipment online.
